When people hear "speech therapy," they often think it’s only for children or for helping someone pronounce sounds more clearly. But for adults—especially those who are neurodivergent or living with an acquired neurological condition—speech therapy can look very different. In fact, “speech” is just one small part of what we do. At Cognition, Speech & Language, we work with adults to support cognitive-communication, executive function, self-advocacy, social interaction, and more. Our goal is to help individuals function more effectively and confidently in their daily lives, whether at work, in the community, or at home.
What Is Cognitive-Communication? Cognitive-communication refers to the connection between how we think and how we communicate. When you have difficulty with memory, attention, reasoning, or organization, it can affect the way you express yourself, understand others, plan conversations, or even follow through with daily routines. For example, a person recovering from a brain injury may struggle to keep track of appointments, find the right words in conversation, or manage multiple tasks at once. Similarly, someone who is autistic or has ADHD may find it difficult to self-regulate during stressful conversations or communicate their needs at work. These are all areas where speech therapy can help. We Support the Whole Person, Not Just Speech Here’s a closer look at what therapy might focus on: 1. Executive Function Skills
Why It Matters When communication or thinking becomes harder—whether suddenly (after a stroke or injury) or gradually (with burnout or aging)—it affects more than just how we talk. It impacts confidence, relationships, independence, and identity. We work with adults who want to reconnect with the parts of life that matter: meaningful work, supportive relationships, self-expression, and the ability to navigate the world on their terms. Speech therapy can be a powerful tool in that process, even when the issue isn’t speech at all. Interested in Working Together?
