Speech Therapy Isn’t Just for Speech: What We Actually Work On

When people hear "speech therapy," they often think it’s only for children or for helping someone pronounce sounds more clearly. But for adults—especially those who are neurodivergent or living with an acquired neurological condition—speech therapy can look very different. In fact, “speech” is just one small part of what we do.
At Cognition, Speech & Language, we work with adults to support cognitive-communication, executive function, self-advocacy, social interaction, and more. Our goal is to help individuals function more effectively and confidently in their daily lives, whether at work, in the community, or at home.

What Is Cognitive-Communication?
Cognitive-communication refers to the connection between how we think and how we communicate. When you have difficulty with memory, attention, reasoning, or organization, it can affect the way you express yourself, understand others, plan conversations, or even follow through with daily routines.

For example, a person recovering from a brain injury may struggle to keep track of appointments, find the right words in conversation, or manage multiple tasks at once. Similarly, someone who is autistic or has ADHD may find it difficult to self-regulate during stressful conversations or communicate their needs at work. These are all areas where speech therapy can help.

We Support the Whole Person, Not Just Speech
Here’s a closer look at what therapy might focus on:

1. Executive Function Skills
  • Planning and organizing daily routines
  • Managing time and energy
  • Prioritizing and completing tasks
  • Reducing overwhelm in unstructured or high-demand environments

2. Social Communication and Interaction
  • Interpreting social cues and navigating group settings
  • Practicing scripts and strategies for common communication breakdowns
  • Building confidence and clarity in self-expression
  • Balancing communication styles (assertive vs. passive or aggressive)

3. Self-Advocacy and Workplace Communication
  • Preparing for interviews or job meetings
  • Setting communication boundaries
  • Requesting accommodations or clarifying expectations
  • Navigating transitions (new roles, returning to work, or medical leave)

4. Processing and Memory Supports
  • Developing visual and written tools for recall
  • Organizing information so it’s easier to understand and retain
  • Adapting communication methods for people with slower processing speeds or auditory fatigue

5. Functional Communication for Daily Life
  • Problem-solving through communication breakdowns
  • Practicing how to express needs clearly and calmly in different settings

Why It Matters
When communication or thinking becomes harder—whether suddenly (after a stroke or injury) or gradually (with burnout or aging)—it affects more than just how we talk. It impacts confidence, relationships, independence, and identity.

We work with adults who want to reconnect with the parts of life that matter: meaningful work, supportive relationships, self-expression, and the ability to navigate the world on their terms.

Speech therapy can be a powerful tool in that process, even when the issue isn’t speech at all.
